Some more exciting news for the game!

We've recently made a few changes to how StylePoints work. Among the chief changes is a reduction in the amount of points rewarded for a full combo (FC) or perfect score (AAA). However, this is balanced by new bonuses for playing longer songs. Players likely won't see much of a difference in their long-term earnings. Here's the breakdown:

    1. The score thresholds for earning particular amounts of StylePoints have been moved around a bit. The first point now comes at 50,000 points, for instance. The second is rewarded at 150,000 points, the third at 350,000 points, and so on, up to a possible eighth StylePoint given at a score of 3.6 million.

    2. Full combos (FCs) are now worth 1 additional StylePoint. Black flags (BFs), for scoring all perfects except for 1 Great on a file, are worth 2 StylePoints, and perfect scores (AAAs) are worth 3 StylePoints.

    3. For passing a song that's at least 2 minutes and 30 seconds long, you'll get a bonus StylePoint. You'll get two for passing a song longer than 5 minutes.

    4. If you pass a song and get a new personal best score, you pick up a bonus StylePoint. But, like in the NHL, no ties allowed.

For all the score thresholds and every way to earn SP so far, have a look at this thread in the forum. Thanks to Tasselfoot for providing his original ideas which were taken into consideration during the revisions, and Vote4Nixon for testing and implementation.

Have fun, guys! Don't spend all those points in one place - unless it's the ThirdStyle Store!

And a special thanks to kisler for coming up with ideas for a new time-based SP formula! It awards almost exactly the same number of SP as the previous formula.

Haha, way to link to a thread in a private forum.

e: And now I look like an idiot! :D

Anyway, yeah, that's what the data shows. We want to encourage exploration of all the musical styles and variety that the game has to offer, and also provide motivation to improve.

yeah, I'm really not liking this new formula; nor am I liking the fact that this wasn't mentioned publicly in the meeting that happened today. To say that it doesn't affect things in the long term is absolutely ridiculous, especially considering someone like me who is actually improving their ranks entirely through lower level (and lower scoring) songs. Why was it necessary to change something that did not need changing at all? If this was to accommodate for some sort of other use for SP, it could have been accommodated for by boosting the overall price of whatever it is you were going to apply SP to (rather that lowering the amounts received in game, which is a bit more frustrating seeing your SP go up that much more slowly).

To paraphrase AJ; "stating a fact is absolutely ridiculous". It's obvious that this is just to counter the usage of Tricky's Song as a constant supply of SP which allows people to gain ridiculous amounts without even really enjoying the game or even improving on anything.

For most people, you're more likely to choke on a longer song. This leads to more plays of longer songs if you're going for the AAA, so you'll get more SP overall which is added to by the bonus points for playing the longer songs anyway.

Also, I'm pretty sure they've made the SP gain based on raw score alone more lenient as I'm sure there was only 6 available with Tass's initial distribution.

Higher scores + longer songs = more overall SP. Since higher scores are derived from either long songs or high note densities, you're guaranteed to get more SP if you just play normally and challenge yourself now rather than just repeatedly whoring Tricky's for hours on end.

But to be honest, no one even needs all of that SP. The top players are just throwing it around and gambling with it anyway since they have no use for it and it's easy to get all of the store songs just by playing all of the currently non-store songs due to the low ratio of songs that are actually in the store. At most, you're gonna experience a slight initial loss, but overall there's no harm done~
