Welcome to ThirdStyle's first StepMania pack! As is probably evident from the title of this thread, this is a StepMania pack compiled and 'managed' on ThirdStyle, consisting of video game music.

We want to do a few things with this pack.

First and foremost, we want to get more players and users involved in the community and introduce new people to stepping files and encourage you to take part. This is an effort to improve community spirit on one hand.

Secondly, we also want to provide some great video game music and possibly even some nostalgic memories of our favourite games. Let's be honest, we've all played video games and it's something we can all relate to.

But I won't bore you with a long first post, if you have any questions they'll be outlined in the next post, please, feel free to submit files, ask questions or request permission to judge!

If you intend on stepping a file, please post your reservations on songs in this thread (up to a maximum of 3 at a time) and we'll edit them into the 3rd post regularly!

Submissions.

Can anyone submit? Indeed they can! We encourage anyone to submit, newbies to experts, ThirdStyle regulars to FFR veterans; we want a wide scope of users, music and charts.

I've never stepped a file before, can I still submit? Of course, we encourage you to! We'll be judging leniently and trying to offer general advice for newbies to improve and get better at this. If you're clueless as to where to start, go check out Patashu's stickies in the forums. They're great, I promise!

How many charts does my file need? At least 2, but if you want to do more, that's great! We'd like one fairly easy chart to encourage lower-level players to get into the game and one moderately difficult chart per file, to keep it interesting. This way everyone can play.

Does my file need graphics? No, ThirdStyle user Internet has agreed to do all the graphics for the pack, so huge thanks to him for that! If you'd like a special cdtitle though, we recommend getting one done beforehand or messaging Koko and politely asking if he'll make you one to your specifications.

Can my file use BPM gimmicks, roll freezes, mines, etc? Yes, as long as they're used in moderation and/or an appropriate manner, feel free to make use of these tools!

Can I step 6-key for this? While the focus of this pack is for 4-key, if you'd like to include 6-key charts, feel free, we'll mention it when we release the pack!

Are collabs allowed? Indeed! They can be a useful way for new simfilers to get tips and can be great fun and reduce your workload. Feel free to submit collabs!

Music.

What music should I use? Video game music, of course! Video game remixes, OST's (original sound tracks/official sound tracks) and anything video game-related is fine! If you're not sure, ask us!

What sort of song should I use? Preferably one that is varied and not too long, but feel free to step whatever you'd like. It'd be great if you chose music from the games you personally loved/love and we had a wide variation of music, but it isn't necessary, pick whatever you like!

Judging.

Judging isn't going to be done instantly, so you'll have to be patient. This is a project, but we all have personal lives that need seeing to as well. We'll try and judge your files as soon as possible, but you have to accept that not every judge can judge every new submission the day it's sent in, we'll definitely try our best though!

We need more judges, so if you'd like to be a judge, please PM me or Nocturne, you don't have to review files super regularly, just be willing to review files every now and then!

Easy -- This is a really good chart Ryan, and it IS nice and easy, but why so white? xD
I really enjoyed your 8th runs and the subtle layering at parts, it kept the file lively and interesting rather than just being a boring 8th/4th stream file.

Medium -- Again, why so white? xD If these are just slightly offset, I'd recommend changing that. It's normally a tactic to highlight certain aspects or accentuate certain parts of the song, not just a bad habit to re-colour a whole section. :P
Also, random 32nd amongst your 192nds right at the end? xD Despite that, this was a cool chart. Some of your layering/stepping choices were a little odd, but I enjoyed it and I can't ask for much more than that. It's a nice little Medium chart and overall it's stepped really well. Good job. :)

Hard -- I think you started this a whole cycle too early? The first set of notes seem to not be going to anything. xD
Regardless, this was a very amusing, interesting and fun chart and it was well stepped. I liked the ways it varied from your other charts and used different note intervals. Congratulations, this is a really good chart and file overall. Thanks for the submission! :')

Medium -- I really enjoyed this. Your jumpjacks were used well and in a stylish manner and they didn't seem forced or stupid.
I'll admit you lost me at times at the start with what you were stepping to, but it's not too hard to follow, just me being stupid. >____>
I feel like most, if not all of the holds should have that little 32nd run, but it's no major issue.
Well done with your holds, they're nicely done and don't get too close, but don't end early.

Oni -- My one little nitpick is that I feel you should change most of the holds into jumps, nothing extreme though.
I enjoyed your hand usage in the chordstreams later on, they were fun and easy to distinguish which sounds they were meant to represent. Good job.
Your climax theory was hawt, I climax'd.
This is a cool Oni file, to be honest. It's definitely a Challenge compared to Medium and it could make a fun little scoring chart. It's nothing ub3r pr0, but it's challenging and I feel lower level players could also enjoy this.

Frog's Theme (Orchestrated) -- Midigami

Medium -- This chart is honestly beautiful. The 24th patterns are amazing and the mines are used in a way such that they'll discourage mashing but won't insta-fail you which is really nice to see.
I can't praise you enough for this, the whole thing is perfect. Good job keeping it distinct from Hard too.

Hard -- This is where the real fun lies. The 32nd patterns are amazing and the chart is just... Perfection. <3
Everything about these 2 charts is great, from your nice usage of 12th jumpjacks to your 24th streamlets, even your 32nd one-handed trills. It's all so classy and fun to play. Thanks for the submission. :')

-Very simple, very clean, precise. Good job.

Medium
-I must be playing a different file cuz i saw no offset 192nds. I like this, it was barely a step up from easy, but the difficulty change was pretty noticable.

Hard
-b16 This section should be gone, its too early.
-b24 see above

Overall the file was entertaining, but it wasn't spectacular, it lacked some grander scheme of layering, It has a lot of room for potential, however, the file itself was not wrong or bad. Good job, just next time try to listen closely to the various sounds and try to layering in the drums as well and use jumps to emphasize percussion and synth harmonization. Well done regardless.

- The ending jumpstream seemed pretty dense for a medium file. and the [34] jumpjack was as well. As a whole, I liked it, it seemed like I played a hard file, but the usage and jumps were inconsistantand the patterns/minijacks were tricky. Well done anyways, I really liked this file.

Oni/Hard
-The freezes at the beginning seemed a bit empty, could have used some layering, i started to notice a deliberate overuse of jumps as the song progressed, it added difficulty and fun to the file, however the ending hands were a bit much lol, i mean its not like this is judging for TS, so i can't be nitpicky, but i had to squint to get the hands just right. Easy enough for me to AAA, but hard enough that not just everyone will. Good job.

-Oh this looks similar.

Ye if this was for actual judging, this would've been pretty bad, at least its not for judging, only for the pack. At least put a rotation or something on your medium notes, man, its the exact same thing as hard without the 32 rolls. like, the EXACT same. I must be playing the wrong .sm file, cuz Medium and Hard are exactly Copypasta'd from each other,

Hard
-My only problem is that those 32nd trills you have there, It'd be more in-time if they were in 3/4th like the rest of it, so they'd be better representing the snare roll at 48ths, but i guess thats to fast for a trill, and 28th's too simplified. I guess im ok with 32nds lol. But 48th rolls wouldve been fine too.

Besides that, nice layering, awesome song! I pass your hard file, but you need to work on the medium file a lot. The difficulty drop is so miniscule its crazy. Make medium alot less layered and a lot easier, 6-key is hard as is, this song becomes much less enjoyable with just overlayered steps.

-1.20 this 4th should be down to a 24th on 1.30

Not a bad file, the BPM seemed a bit skewed for being 8ths throughout, but it worked out fine. The song is in 3/4th time so i wouldve used a different BPM and used 12ths and 24ths. Regardless, nice choon you got there :)

Hard
-I would make this first hold a jump with a sustained hold on the left like you have it, since theres two horns.
-0.600 This one hand trill kills since its offbeat. Have the first note be on a 48th on [0.85] then go down 6 192nds and trill it every 64th from that 48th (I'm making adjustments on my computer, so if you need my fixes to reference, lemme know <3)
-Again, I'd make the next freeze a jump with sustained hold on one note.

Besides the intro, I loved the rest of it, wished it was longer (inb4datswhatshesaid) and less repetitive. :P Good job man.

-Initial play-through, i felt disappointed that their wasn't much layering, the distinctive stepping was placed to signify the orchestral groove. Not a big deal, but i felt like the song was empty, cause none of the drums were stepped disregarding the cymbol crashes.
-A little pitch relevancy would never hurt in the intro :P
-31.200, yes there is a horn sound here, but the freeze shouldnt be there, it should be on a 4thnote right below it .12seconds down (on 31.32)
-33.12, 35.04, 36.96, 38.88, etc. see above
-46.2 could be hand for crash sound layering
-53.88 this should be a hand (3note) just like the 8th at 54.12
-58.2 this section should be 12ths, not 16ths.

Alot of little errors and underlayering. The file was cool, but it wasn't amazing like it def couldve been

Medium
-seemed fine, just felt too much like hard because of hard's lack of layering.

Easy
-Felt too much like medium. But again, the file as a whole is fine, just in comparison, its too similar.

-DAT INTRO
-such a simplistic song, yet such a moving melody and spectacularly slow beat. I actually wanted to keep playing this song afterwards, i felt like i was in a different world.
-Nice usage of hands for layering
-Great usage of holds

Overall, I thought the file was beautifully done, it was an easy song to step, but you did it great. Good job.

Medium/Easy
-Great job i loved it, no problems

-Loved it, ony problem was the jacks. You use a lot of jacks throughout the song, but they signify nothing since you used them randomly. I suggest you check through the change the jacks around so there are none, or use them consistantly.

I recommend using this program to download songs from YouTube, but you should probably search for a high quality .mp3 download or a .torrent with one or something if there's only low quality versions available on YouTube. (not referencing this specific example.) Or if you'd like and have an e-mail address, I'll find a copy of the song and send it over to you, if you can't manage.

We've got your back! ;) I found a rip of the soundtrack (*.spc file) and converted it to mp3 (192kbps) for you. Just right-click that and "Save link as..." since some browsers like to play mp3s. I like this song as well, it turns out.

And count me in on submitting something for the TS pack. I've got a collection of chiptunes from my favorite genesis/snes games. Unfortunately I have yet to reserve a few, so I'll post again later (or edit this one).
